Firstly, you’ll find that it gives you a whole new insight into the technicalities of yacht construction. When you’re following someone else’s plan, you just put things where they are because that’s what the plan says. But when you’re designing a hull, you put things where they are because you’ve developed an insight into the design and that’s where you think they will be most effective. The same goes for shapes and sizes. It’s the difference between a blind man following a handrail and a sighted man boldly striding out on his own into new, unknown territory. There’s just no comparison!
Flexibility
Secondly, you get flexibility. Following someone else’s design means that, if you want to achieve the right end result, you have to follow their instructions to the letter. If you don’t, you’ll end up with bits that don’t fit where they should fit or that don’t match up with the other bits that you haven’t changed. If you draw up your own yacht design it yourself you can modify your design as you go along.
Check and go
Not that I’d recommend it, but sometimes, as you proceed with your build, you’ll suddenly come up with an idea for an improvement or a realization that something could be done better. In that case you can go back to your yacht design and re-jig it as necessary. Check the hydrostatic and drag calculations to determine the effect of your changes, and carry on. Improving as you go.

You might think that yacht design is a very specialized business best left to the professionals. Well, I used to think that too and when I built my first yacht in 1990 I commissioned a professional yacht designer to draw up the plans for me. It cost me over eleven percent of the overall cost of the project.
I wasn’t happy
And, to tell the truth, I wasn’t that happy with the plans I finally ended up with:
a) They arrived four weeks later than promised
b) They lacked significant detail
c) The designer was very reluctant to make changes that I wanted, and that I felt to be necessary
d) They were expensive
Easy to learn
I decided I was never going to make that mistake again. If I want a yacht design, then now, I draw it up for myself. And it’s not that difficult. I was rather apprehensive when I started but, with the modern, highly flexible software that’s now available it was easy to learn the fundamentals and then build on that knowledge as I progressed.
Three wins!
I’m not a technical person by any means, I work in the retail business, but I have to say I surprised myself with the yacht designs I have produced. One of my designs, that I produced for a member of my club and that he built a year later, has won the 6 meter challenge cup at our club for three years running.
Experiment
I’m now in the middle of my next design. Designing your own boat gives you the opportunity to experiment with shapes and curves. And if the software you are usung has the built-in resistance and hydrostatic calculation modules, so much the better. This will enable you to quickly and easily test the effects that any changes you might make to your design will have on speed and displacement.
I’d never go back to using a paid designer. Drawing up my own yacht designs is the best investment I’ve ever made in my yachting career and certainly one of the most satisfying.

A great party is a combination of great food, great ambiance, and a truly unique setting. Consider the difference of a soiree hosted at the top of the Empire State Building and one hosted at the local Marriott hotel. Granted, they can both be fun – but, the soiree in the penthouse of the Empire State Building is sure to have that something extra that makes it a memorable and transformative experience. Of course, it takes more than just the setting, but if you can mix in great food, great guests, and great conversation, it could very well change peoples’ lives.
While reserving the Empire State Building penthouse may be impractical for most, reserving a luxury yacht is surprisingly affordable. Whether cruising the bay or simply anchored off shore, the yacht promises much. It promises cozy exclusivity and a multi-tiered platform within which guests can come and go, eat and drink, and take in some of the most breathtaking views of the city, the sky, and the ocean. What is the ideal wedding? Well, it may be many things to many people, but seldom is it a remembered occasion. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t stand out in the minds of the attendees come a year a later. It’s a sad fact, but the most elegant – most well-planned – wedding is seldom the most-loved, best-remembered. No, not the origami-folded cloth napkins or tuxedo-clad waiters or the fresh Chilean bass in garlic aspic suspension – none of that will be remembered. Mind you, this comes from having three older sisters and having attended more weddings than I can count.
Now, that being said, I do recall a handful of weddings to this day. Granted, they were all either theme or destination weddings, but I think that’s what it takes to make a wedding memorable. In fact, of the handful I can remember, two stand out in particular. One was a destination wedding in Bangalore, India – and the second was a yacht wedding off the coast of Los Angeles. So you see: a foreign land or an unconventional setting.
Given a choice between having to relive the two weddings, I think I would rather step on-board the thirty-foot yacht replete with finely catered food and cakes than relive my colorful trip to India. This is not to say that a destination wedding is less exciting than a yacht wedding, but seeing as how I suffered from a dreadful case of dysentery brought on from a poorly prepared beef curry, I say give me the boat anytime.
A slow, languid cruise around the Los Angeles Bay or three days of intestinal pain? You can see how they would both be quite memorable – each in their own distinctive ways. Therefore, for you would-be couples basking in the glow of young love, it’s time to forget blazing a trail through wedding history and rethink the traditional, elegant ceremony and reception. Either rethink them or have them hosted in an unprecedented way – like on-board a luxury yacht.
